SOLIYA CONNECT PROGRAM!

Don't forget to join us today at 4:00pm for an information session about the Soliya Connect Program. If you are interested in participating this semester, here is a brief overview:

The Connect Program is a virtual cross-cultural exchange program that focuses primarily on the relationship between Western societies and predominantly Muslim societies, and works with college-age / level students. Participants are placed in groups of approximately 8-9 other students, they meet their respective groups each week for the 8 weeks of the Program semester via a videoconferencing platform. Each of the 8 sessions is 2 hours long, and students are expected to attend the full session, and complete 2 sets of assignments over the course of 8 weeks.

Today at 2:00 we will have a showing of the film, Into the Wild. This is the true story of Christopher McCandles who renounces his mainstream life to live simply. The movie follows his journey to the wilderness in Alaska. Following the film we will have a discussion.

DEBATE IS BACK!

The AC Debate Club will start back up again this Saturday at 1:00pm. We look forward to seeing all of the familiar faces and hoping to see some new ones too!

Change of Schedule

Some rescheduling has taken place this week and the American subculture series has been postponed for a later date. Today, at 4:00 we will discuss whether the US should enforce a ban on assault weapons as well as debate the similarities and differences of gun laws between Tunisia and the US.

For tomorrow, Friday the 20th, we will have a film screening and discussion afterwards starting at 4:00.

Thursday: Presentation and discussion hour on Goth and Emo subcultures. 16:00h

Friday: Film Firday! We will show a screening of a film related to one of these subcultures at 16:00h

Monday September 9th: Guest speaker, journalist Patrick Strickland will join us via Skype at 15:30 to discuss the issues and human rights violations facing Palestinians in the West Bank. He will also talk about his experiences as an American living in Palestine.

Tuesday September 10th: No event scheduled. AC will possibly be closed.

Wednesday September 11th: Conversation hour on the subject of 9/11, the effects and aftermath this event has had on the US and the rest of the world, at 16:00

Thursday September 12th: Fitness Club meeting at 16:30

Friday September 13th: Friday Fun Day!! Friends, Food and Fun! Celebrating the last Friday before school starts.

Monday:  Labor Day - Conversation hour at 16:00 about the  meaning of Labor Day followed by a presentation by guest speaker Samantha Benitez, via Skype, who will discuss her educational and travel experiences and answer your questions.

Tuesday: Essay writing workshop. Tips and techniques for writing a good college application essay.

Wednesday: Presentation from guest speaker Ahlem Ben Mohamed Nasraoui on her experience with SUSI and living in the United States at 14:00.

Thursday: Film screening (time and film to be announced)

Friday: Presentation by guest speaker Khouloud Khammassi on how to give a good academic/professional presentation, at 16:00.

Tunisian High School Students Debate Country’s Issues

Tunis, May 11, 2013 – The American Corner (AC) Debating Club at AMIDEAST, in partnership with the Young Arab Voices program, will hold their first competition Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 11:00 am– 4:00pm at AMIDEAST/Tunis.  Students from the AMIDEAST American Corner in Sousse will travel to Tunis to debate their peers about social, political, and cultural issues. 

The AC Debating Club is a group of motivated young people who gather every Saturday afternoon to practice critical thinking, examine logical fallacies, and exercise public speaking and presentation skills.
