Bio:

Vivienne Walt is a seasoned foreign correspondent, reporting widely for Time Magazine since 2003, from Iraq, Europe, and most recently the embattled Niger Delta and the Democratic Republic of Congo. She spent nearly two years reporting from Iraq before and after the US invasion, twice narrowly avoiding rocket attacks in Baghdad, and once a bullet that lodged in her car seat. Her interviews have spanned the extremes of humanity: from heads of state, international diplomats, CEOs, and Hollywood stars; to street prostitutes in Asia, jailed criminals, Muslim insurgents, and guerrilla fighters. She has reported from Iran several times since 2000, focusing on internal cultural battles and the government's growing defiance against the West. This past year, she has written from Iran and Africa about China's mounting economic and military power, and its implications for Western interests. She has written widely in the Middle East, and in Asia, she has reported from China, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Thailand.

Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, Walt emigrated to New York City and became a staff writer for Newsday, for which she was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for her reports from Africa. Her work has been published in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, National Geographic, Fortune Magazine, The Los Angeles Times Magazine, and many other publications. She has also been a regular guest on CNN, Fox News and National Public Radio in the US.

She currently lives in Paris with her husband, a television producer, and in cyberspace on vivwalt@yahoo.com.

Bio:

Jason R. Levine is currently the Academic Director of CAMPUS Education, an English language school with multiple centers in the U.S. and overseas. Endowed with fourteen years of experience as a teacher, trainer, and creator of educational materials, Jason has worked with teachers and young learners of English in many parts of the world. He is also the Founder and President of ColloLearn, LLC, an educational program for children and adults whereby he produces original songs and games to teach English language arts, math, social studies, science, and foreign languages; performs and trains at numerous schools and organizations; writes chants for Oxford University Press; maintains a website and popular YouTube channel. Jason’s workshops and lectures demonstrate how activities based on repetitive input of collocations can promote accurate and fluent use of language and foster critical thinking skills. Jason holds a Master’s of Arts in TESOL, K-12; Departmental honors from Hunter College, New York and a Bachelor Degree in Psychology from Vassar College.

Bio:

Erica Cochran is an Adjunct Assistant Professor and PhD Candidate in the School of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Erica is a LEED Accredited Professional, holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Virginia Tech, a Master of Science in Sustainable Design from CMU, and is working towards her PhD in Building Performance & Diagnostics. Her teaching experience includes serving as an Adjunct Instructor for Master’s Synthesis courses, undergraduate design studio, LEED Buildings & Green Design, and working with the Remaking Cities Institute’s UDream program; a program which provides recent graduates a deeper understanding of urban design through research projects and paid internships. Erica is a co-award winner of the 2010 Isabel Sophia Liceaga Discretionary Fund Faculty Award and the 2009 first place winner of the George W. Anderson Graduate Student Award. Erica has also served as a studio critic at Pratt Institute and the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to joining CMU, Erica served as a Project Manager and Project Designer for firms in New York City and Connecticut. Her architectural experience includes over ten years of experience with educational, media & broadcast, residential, community, and transportation facilities. She is also an active member of several community service and non-profit organizations. Erica’s doctoral research investigates the impact of school building and neighborhood physical and environmental characteristics on student and teacher health and performance in dense urban environments. She is also a contributing researcher for a Sustainable Engineering text book and serves on the research team for the Greater Philadelphia Innovation Cluster (GPIC) for Energy-Efficient Buildings Energy Innovation Hub.
